Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff thinks a health care reform plan in Washington could spur lawsuits. Shurtleff told the Deseret News Tuesday evening that whatever health care reform bill comes out of Washington, it will be seriously reviewed for possible state constitutional violations. Shurtleff said a lawsuit could be brought against the federal government if the bill imposes fines or sanctions against employers who don't offer health care coverage.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, at the request of attorneys general from 18 states including Utah, has agreed to investigate the practice of adding alcohol to energy drinks. The move was applauded Wednesday by Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, who joined 17 of his colleagues in asking the FDA to check into the danger of alcoholic drinks that contain caffeine and other stimulants. "This is a safety issue and we are asking the FDA to act quickly to protect consumers," Shurtleff said.

Apart from the special election for the late Sen. Edward Kennedy's (D-Mass.) seat, the next big elections will be primaries that set the stage for Election Day 2010. Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff says the state has reached a $24 million civil settlement with Eli Lilly & Co. over claims the drug maker engaged in off-label marketing of the anti-psychotic drug Zyprexa. Shurtleff's office said Wednesday that it conducted a nearly four-year investigation that showed Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly concealed that Zyprexa has an association with significant weight gain and obesity.
